15 Minutes with Alice Philip of Everyday Needs

Last week we took our Auckland Supreme Meets on the road. Well, about 2km down Ponsonby Road to Everyday Need’s flagship store. Punters engaged in their standard Friday morning routine, coffee and brekky - albeit, a little fancier - in the beautiful store. While we were there, we sat down with Alice Philip, one of the lovely EDN team members to get to know her and Everyday Needs a little better.

Q: I’ve just arrived on the planet, what is Everyday Needs?
Alice: Everyday Needs is a store dedicated to bringing you well-designed quality items. Things you never knew you needed but can’t imagine your life without.

Q: How do you decide which products/brands/makers to stock in Everyday Needs?
Alice: We appreciate well designed and functional items so that is at the forefront when we are deciding what we would like to sell/ look at every day in the store. Things that are tried and true and stand the test of time. I love working with our NZ makers, as they are all so talented and it is so neat seeing their products in-store.

Q: What’s your morning routine; what’s your favourite toast topping? Do you eat standing straight the breadboard, or sit down with a plate? Light or dark roast?
Alice: Mornings aren’t my favourite but I try and get some exercise in and like to get a coffee or tea with friends at local haunts around Auckland. Love me some Coffee Supreme filter! Favourite toast topping… Sourdough with butter and cheese or butter and honey.

Q: Smooth or crunchy?
Alice: Always crunchy. Currently on a rotation of all Fix and Fogg as well as Ceres Almond Butter.

Q: #1 Auckland snack/meal under $10?
Alice: The loaded porridge at Crumb is a real winter warmer. And Duck Island Ice Cream, which is dangerously close to the shop! And the ham and cheese croissant from Daily Bread/ anything from these guys.

Q: What gets you out of bed in the morning?
Alice: My days are quite varied so knowing there is something different on each day definitely helps! I am also lucky enough to work with some incredible people so seeing or talking to them is a bonus.

Q: The biggest design cliché right now is:
Alice: That’s a really hard question, what makes a design cliche in the first place?

Q: What’s on the horizon for Everyday Needs?
Alice: We have some exciting collaborations coming up with NZ makers – watch this space. As well as getting lots of summer stock in!

Q: Who do you look to for inspiration/who do you look up to?
Alice: Friends, family, EDN customers & makers, art, music, nature. Everything.

Q: Do you have a favourite item instore at the moment?
Alice: My favourite items in-store are ever-changing but my top three currently; Ildhane candlestick, Valentina Sunglasses and Maryse mineral dew.

Q: What question are you dying to answer that we haven’t asked?
Alice: Your home must be an Everyday needs catalogue?

You can find Everyday Needs at 270 Ponsonby Rd, Monday to Sunday. Alongside their range of beautiful products, you will now find Coffee Supreme Instant, KeepCups, Hario Bona Drip Kettles and Hario Thermal Servers.
